ANTONIO ORTIZ ECHAGÜE, (Guadalajara, 1883 - Buenos Aires, 1942).

It presents restorations and visible craquelure on the face. The frame has a lack in the lower left side.
Measurements: 110 x 106,5 cm; 138 x 130 cm (frame).
Brother of the famous photographer José Ortiz Echagüe, he received his first artistic training in Paris, where he stayed from 1897 studying at the Julien Academy and later at the French Fine Arts Academy. He also worked in the studio of Léon Bonnat. In 1901 he went to Rome, where he stayed for a year and shared a studio with Coco Madrazo. In 1903 he won a place to study at the Rome Academy after winning a prize at the exhibition held at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1907 he travelled to Sardinia and Holland, where he produced period paintings of Sardinian and Dutch themes, which brought him into contact with the Romantic painting of the time. In 1912 he returned to Spain to paint a portrait of Alfonso XII. A year later he travelled to Argentina, where he became known as a portraitist. He held his first one-man exhibition in 1919, and from then on his activity was spread over various countries, such as the United States, Argentina and Holland. In 1933 he moved with his family to La Pampa in Argentina, where he lived for the rest of his life. Academically trained, he had a long career as a portraitist and genre painter. His works abound in cultural allusions, of which the Sardinian, Dutch and Moroccan paintings are the best examples. On occasions he introduced into his painting chromatic solutions close to Iturrino and Fauvism. Antonio Ortiz was awarded third (1904, 1906) and second medals (1910) at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He won the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Munich in 1909 and the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1921. He was appointed knight of the court of Alfonso XII in 1922, and in 1926 president of the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Madrid. He is currently represented in his house-museum in La Pampa, as well as in various private American and European collections.
