SANTIAGO ARCOS Y MEGALDE (Santiago de Chile, 1869 - ?, 1912)."Smoker".Watercolour on paper.Signed in
"Smoker".
Watercolour on paper.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Size: 22,5 x 15,5 cm; 51 x 44,5 cm (frame).
This work is framed within the costumbrismo, and the main character is a man dressed in tights and sackcloth, in the fashion of the end of the Middle Ages, situated in a more modern tavern interior. It is a carnival scene, as the grotesque mask on the floor emphasises. Apart from the description typical of the genre painting of the period, Santiago Arcos sought decorative elements through the play of the wisps of smoke, which envelop the figure in a naturalistic manner.
A painter of costumbrista themes and popular types, although he also tackled other subjects such as religion, mythology, landscape and portraiture, Santiago Arcos worked in oil painting, watercolour, drawing and illustration. He began his training in Spain with Madrazo, as a protégé of Queen Isabella II, and subsequently moved to France, furthering his studies in Paris with Léon Bonnat. In 1878 he exhibited in Madrid and the following year in the French city of Pau, where he took part in the Exhibition of the Friends of the Arts. In 1881 he took part in the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he was awarded an honourable mention. That same year he was awarded a third medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid, for the historical canvas "Philip II receiving a deputation from the Netherlands". In 1884, 1885, 1896, 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, 1900, 1903, 1906 and 1907 he again took part in the Exhibition of the Friends of the Arts in Pau. In 1900 he also took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, winning a silver medal. The following year he also exhibited in Paris at the Exposition des Beaux-Arts, and in 1903 at the Salon des Amis des Arts in Bayonne-Biarritz. Works by Santiago Arcos are currently housed in the Prado Museum.
