Measurements: 158 x 114 x 53 cm.
Dressing table by the English firm Waring & Gillow, with two bodies and a structure of stylised and proportioned lines, combining turned legs with open and cut out profiles. The lower body, like a tall chest of drawers, is decorated only with simple mouldings and gilt metal handles. Above this body is a base with shelves, drawers and a tilting mirror. This formal and ornamental purity is typical of the Arts & Crafts, and relates to the tradition of English folk furniture, solid and functional, with beautifully grained wood as the only decoration, in most cases.
Waring & Gillow was a leading English furniture manufacturer, founded in 1897 as a result of the merger of the firms of Gillows of Lancaster and London and Waring of Liverpool. Very active during the Arts & Crafts period, under the name Waring & Gillow from 1903, the company changed its name in 1980 when a third partner, Maple (Maple, Waring & Gillow) joined. The firm was mainly dedicated to the manufacture of high quality furniture, and also made luxury pieces for large ships such as the steamship HMY Victoria & Albert, the ocean liner RMS Lusitania or the Queen Mary (1936), among others.
