Spanish school, 16th century.
"Saint Apollonia and Saint Agatha".
Oil on panel (in two sections).
They are also painted on the back (with borders and scrolls).
Lacking paint and wood. Xylophages.
Measurements: 84 x 59 cm.
The two saints represented on these panels are easily recognisable because they are holding the instruments of their martyrdom in their hands. Apollonia can be identified by the pincers with which she holds a tooth. She was martyred by the violent extraction of all her teeth, and is therefore the patron saint of dentistry. She carries the palm of martyrdom, as does Saint Agatha, whom we can identify by her torn out breasts, which she shows on a plate. The executioners tore out her breasts, which Saint Peter later cured, making her the patron saint of wet-nurses and nursing mothers. Stylistically, both figures are characterised by the nobility of their poses and the serenity of their features, outlined by means of a precise drawing that does not neglect colour. They are set in desert landscapes, although they are surrounded by green foliage. The panel belongs to the Spanish Renaissance school.
