Gothic chest, 15th century.Wooden, velvet or gilded iron core.It shows signs of wear.Measurements:
Wooden, velvet or gilded iron core.
It shows signs of wear.
Measurements: 13 x 23 x 12 cm.
A chest known as an assayalada, as they are lined on the outside with cloth. This piece was probably created in the 15th century, although it is related to a typology that was already very widespread in the 15th century. It has a rectangular lower body and a domed upper lid. The handle and clasps, both the central lock and the side latches, are made of wrought iron, as are the reinforcements with fleur-de-lis finials on the sides. Both have been over-gilded to make them more decorative. The corners of the lid and the underside of the box are enriched by the application of a trimming ribbon. The interior of the box is open, without compartmentalisation, and is also decorated with a drapery that protects the objects deposited in the box from the dampness of the wood and the rust that could result from the nailing of the box or the rivets on the latches and handles.
Assayalada chests are characteristic of the time of the Catholic Monarchs. They were lined with cloth, the richest of which were silk or linen velvet. Silk and linen velvet was known in Europe from the 14th century and was used both for the manufacture of sumptuous clothes (both for lay people and for liturgical vestments) and for the decoration of rich furniture and interiors. It was usually produced in intense shades such as red, blue and green. These were highly prized shades at the time, as it was very difficult to produce dyes in bright, vivid hues, and they also had heraldic value. Today, however, these velvets have lost their pile, both through use and the passage of time, and show the characteristic wear and tear of material and colour that can be seen in this chest.
