"Portrait of a gentleman.
Oil on canvas. Re-coloured.
It presents faults, repainting and restorations.
Measurements: 105 x 90 cm; 131 x 113 cm (frame).
Male portrait in which the author presents us the protagonist in profile, seated on a chair that is also placed in profile. The twisting of the man's body allows us, as spectators, to see his face in its entirety. His gesture with his mouth half-open, his gaze lost in the distance, and his right hand resting on his chest show us a work that transcends the mere effigy, seeking to capture the character's own psychology, this being one of the most relevant features of the work, as the author synthesises and reduces the portrait to the mere capture of the character, without adding any accessory element, except for the chair.
Technically, the work follows the aesthetic patterns popularised during the 17th century, specifically in the Italian school. The neutral, dark background that lends monumentality to the figure, and the light treatment based on a contrast of light and shadow that allows the flesh tones to be modelled, are common characteristics of the school and the period in question.
