Description
LUDWIG DIETRICH VON BEÄRN (Germany, 1872 - Barcelona, 1936).
"Saint Henry" and "Saint Augustine of Hippo".
Pair of stained glass windows.
The stained glass window of Saint Henry is signed and located (Provence), located in the lower part of the saint.
Measurements: 233 x 47 cm; 290 x 67 cm.
A set of large-format stained-glass windows with an identical structure and fairly similar decoration. The decorated glass is inscribed in an opening that is articulated in the manner of a door. In each of the cases, in the lower area, there is a square session, decorated with a brightly coloured central rose window. In the upper zone, in each of the showcases, a rectangular section with a legend announcing the names of the saints represented; St. Henry and St. Augustine of Hippo can be seen. In the central area, inscribed in a design that follows architectural precepts derived from the Gothic style, is the figure of the saint, in each case with their corresponding attributes. Saint Augustine is seated, holding a flaming heart in one hand and a feather in the other, which he directs towards an open book. Saint Henry, standing in the centre of the composition, holds a crozier topped with a cross, and in his other hand he holds a model of a church. Finally, each scene ends in a gable.
Ludwig Dietrich was a glassmaker of Alsatian origin who trained in his native country, working in areas such as Strasbourg and Reims. He later moved to Barcelona, where he created an artistic tradition that was followed and spread by his sons. Aesthetically, Ludwig's stained glass windows were based on tradition, but he incorporated stylistic precepts typical of modernism. It is true that, due to the passing of time, fashions changed and modernism ceased to be a thriving aesthetic, so Dietrich returned to more classical forms, close to his beginnings as a glassmaker. His technical knowledge of grisaille and enamels brought him great recognition in his career, so much so that he often collaborated with other workshops. One of his best known works are the stained glass windows known as "Las Damas de Cerdanyola", located in Cerdanyola del Vallés in Barcelona.
