Description
ASTERIO MAÑANÓS MARTÍNEZ (Palencia, 1865 - c. 1935).
"Interior", 1934.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 47 x 74 cm; 69 x 95 cm (frame).
Asterio Mañanós began his training at the Municipal School of Palencia, where his teacher was Justo María de Velasco, and later he went to the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he entered in 1877. In the capital he also attended the studios of Casto Plasencia and Casado del Alisal, as well as the Prado Museum, where he made copies of Velázquez. In 1881 he took part for the first time in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. From then on he alternated his residence between Madrid and Palencia, where he was commissioned to make the curtains and backdrops for the Teatro de Recreo Palentino. In 1885 he obtained a pension to further his artistic studies in Rome, which enabled him to reside in the Italian capital for a year. On his return, together with Sabino Ojero, he undertook the decoration of the Teatro de la Peña Palentina, and together with Isidro Mallol he opened a drawing academy called "Casado del Alisal" in honour of his teacher. Shortly afterwards, in 1889, Mañanós moved to Paris for a year to study with Léon Bonnat. He returned to Spain again, and in 1908 he was appointed by the Senate Government Commission as curator of the works of art of the Upper House. As a result of this experience, he produced several paintings on the subject of the sessions and halls of the Senate, an invaluable document of his time. Asterio Mañanós is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Royal Academy of History and other important collections, both public and private.
In this canvas Asterio Mañanós presents a large interior space, very developed in depth, magnificently constructed and full of finely worked anecdotal details, which give the scene an everyday character, endowing it with life and closeness. It is an intimate, lived-in space, whose solid spatial construction could be related to the scenographic experiences of its author.
