Reg. no. AUG 298
Chassis no. Z11306
Engine no. Z3056

By 1934 Lagonda’s flagship model the M45, had attracted a great deal of publicity, mainly due to skilful marketing. It looked like a bargain to everyone, its only real competitors were the Alvis Speed 20, which although £100 cheaper, didn’t have the same performance and the Bentley 3 ½ litre, which although just as quick, it was a massive £600 more expensive. M45s were selling as quickly as they were made and the Lagonda marque had become more popular than ever before. In the autumn of 1934 Lagonda gained enormous publicity from their performance in the Ulster Tourist Trophy. Three special short-wheelbase 4 ½ litre chassis had been purchased by Warwick Wright and these 10ft 3” chassis featured the newly introduced girling brake system. The shorter chassis was designed for the new Rapide model of the 4 ½ litre range, that was introduced for the 1934 Motor Show. This top of the range motor car used a more highly tuned Meadows engine and was fitted with extra features such as built-in jacks, hydraulic dampers and a new tourer body, the T9, which distinctively had an all-new disappearing hood. Alongside it, on the same chassis, Lagonda introduced a new model, the 3 ½ litre, but with fewer ‘trimmings’. The engine, although new, was evolved from the 3 litre, but bored out to 80 mm, giving 3,619 cc. At the end of November the M35R was ready to be road tested. With a top speed of over 84 mph, The Autocar and The Motor revelled in the test. Initially the model was coded 3.5 on their identity plate, but quite soon this was changed to M35R because it shared the Rapide chassis. The 3 ½ litre had a very short production run of about five months and so is now quite a rare car
