1955 Vincent Black Shadow 998cc Series D with Black Prince Bodywork Reg. no. RGY 478 Frame. no.
Reg. no. RGY 478
Frame. no. RD12580B
Engine no. F10AB18295
The Vincent Black Shadow was a hand built motorcycle produced by Vincent HRD from 1948. The series 'D', had a 998cc, 50 degree OHV V-twin engine that produced 55 BHP at 5500 RPM. With this amount of power the model was capable of 120 MPH. The reason for its name "Black" Shadow was that the entire bike (including the engine) was coloured black including enamelled crank-cases and covers. The reason for this is still the subject of some debate but, whatever the reason, this machine was very different from anything else at a time when all other motorcycles were polished and chromium plated. Fewer than 1,700 Black Shadows were produced making them a highly desirable and much sought after motorcycle. The last range produced prior to the closure of the factory in 1955, was the Series D, of which only 535 were made (235 ‘enclosed’ and 300 ‘open’)
N.B. A spare headstock is currently fitted while the original component was refurbished. The original item will be included with the motorcycle.
