1955 Jaguar XK 140 Roadster SE
Reg. no. WSU 582
Chassis no. S811498
Engine no. G4011-85

Introduced for 1955, the Jaguar XK140 was broadly similar to, though more refined than, its excellent XK120 predecessor, major mechanical changes being confined to the repositioning of the engine 7.5cm further forward and the adoption of rack-and-pinion steering. The suspension and brakes remained much as before, though with stiffer torsion bars at the front and telescopic shock absorbers replacing lever type at the rear. Outwardly the XK140 was distinguishable by its revised radiator grille, rear lights incorporating flashing indicators, and larger bumpers. The power unit remained Jaguar's well-tried, 3.4-litre, twin-cam six, which now produced 190bhp in standard trim. A close-ratio gearbox enabled better use to be made of the increased performance and overdrive became an option for the first time. Special Equipment (SE) cars came with wire wheels and Lucas fog lamps, and could be ordered with an engine developing 210bhp courtesy of the C-type cylinder head. The XK140 performed well compared to its exemplary predecessor, road-tests regularly recording top speed figures in excess of 120mph. This car was originally delivered in 1955 to Hoffman in New York and it remained in the USA until 1989; sadly nothing is known of the cars history during this period. It was brought back to the UK by XK Engineering and then restored by them for the present owner. We understand that most records have been kept that support the various work, the most significant of which was in 2006 when major work was carried out on the engine and the gearbox was changed. Since 1990 the car has been used in many non-competitive Continental and other rallies. This much enjoyed British classic is fitted with the ‘C’ type cylinder head and is now reluctantly offered due to the owner’s advancing years. It comes with a heritage certificate, most relevant bills and a V5c.
