1929 Humber 16/50 Tickford All Weather Saloon by Salmons & Sons
Reg. no. GC 1582
Chassis no. 17735
Engine no. 17735

This car is most unusual in that it does not have a Humber body, but one built by the coachbuilders Salmons and Sons of Newport Pagnell. The owner has owned the car twice in the past and always regretted selling it, but yet again a lack of space forces a sale. Whilst Humber built the majority of their own bodies, they did supply various models in chassis form. In 1929 fourteen 16/50 chassis’ were supplied to coachbuilders. At least one of these (chassis no. 17735) was supplied to Salmons & Sons in November 1929. The body style chosen by the first owner was their ‘Tickford All Weather Saloon’. This body has a folding hood allowing the car to be used in open or closed form. It is understood that this car was sold new to a Dr. Charles Loosely of Hampstead from the Humber stand at the 1929 Motor Show. The chassis left the factory on the 19th of November 1929 via Mulliners of Northampton to the Salmons works. Mulliners in addition to their own coach building activities, were also agents for Humber. It would seem that with the exception of one floor board and the front carpet, the car is as it left Salmons. The interior is of a very high standard and though showing its age, it is in remarkable condition. The third owner had the car mechanically restored by Barry Simpson Engineering in 1979 at a cost of £16,000. More recently the car received some remedial works, including rebuilding of the carburettor and our vendor reports that the car is running well and starts without hesitation (due to its electronic ignition). GC 1582 is now offered as a truly unique car with its original logbook, various bills detailing work carried out in the past, a current MOT and a V5c.
