CHINA, MING DYNASTY STONE TORSO OF A WARRIOR
Ca. 1368-1644 AD. Ming Dynasty. A light cream stone torso of a warrior. The heavily-armoured figure stands in a static posture with his legs at shoulder-width apart and one arm raised in front of the body. The figure’s arms, body and legs are covered in heavy, interlocking plates of armour over a baggy tunic, and covered by a heavy cape, a uniform typical of medieval Chinese warfare. The figure stands atop a square base, apparently barefooted, perhaps suggesting that this piece depicts a ceremonial occasion rather than a warrior during battle. This stunning piece would form an excellent centre piece to a modern collection. Good condition. Size: L:475mm / W:280mm (w/o stand); 25.2kg. Provenance: Private London collection, formed in the 1970s on the UK and European art market.
