A rare London Opinion news-stand WWI recruiting poster by Alfred Leete - 'Your Country Needs You',
A rare London Opinion news-stand WWI recruiting poster by Alfred Leete - 'Your Country Needs You', linen backed, printed by the Victoria Printing Company Ltd., Sep 5 1914, 30" x 20". This poster was purchased by the vendor in the USA and is reputed to have been in the collection of Mrs Fiske Warren. This news-stand poster formed the basis of the famous Lord Kitchener recruiting poster in which the words 'London Opinion' and 'Needs You', were replaced by 'Britons' and 'Wants You'. It is believed that only three other examples are presently known. Two are in the Library of Congress, Washington DC and a third was sold at auction in the UK during 2021. This example appears to have lain in storage for some time, safely out of sunlight, with the red colour remaining very strong and very minor wear. The vendor recalls that he purchased it in 2005 at an auction in Long Island, USA, which included a group of posters that had surfaced to the market having once been in the collection of Mrs. Gretchen Fiske Warren.
