Since gaining his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1969, he has worked full-time as a professional painter based in Ayrshire. He is a regular exhibitor with the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and has exhibited with the Royal Scottish Academy and lectured for the Scottish Arts Council. He has also won several prizes and awards throughout his career including the David Cargill Award and the Britoil Award. James has enjoyed a long and successful career with many solo shows.
