oil on canvas, signed
framed
image size 34cm x 44cm, overall size 49cm x 58cm
Provenance: Private Collection, Dundee.
Note: Painter, teacher and writer, born in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire. He was educated at Queen’s Park School in Glasgow and Edinburgh University, and attended Edinburgh College of Art, 1947–52, winning a travelling scholarship in 1952–3, then becoming an Andrew Grant Fellow, 1955–7. Between 1957–85 he taught painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, in Dundee. Wrote monograph on the painter John Maxwell. McClure’s painting occasionally adopts the slightly mystical qualities of Maxwell’s work, but he is instantly recognisable as a rich Colourist. Elected RSA in 1971 and showed widely in group shows in Scotland and elsewhere. One-man exhibitions began in 1957 with Circolo di Cultura, Palermo; others included Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh; and Thackeray Gallery, London. In 1988 Fine Art Society, Glasgow and Edinburgh, gave him a retrospective; there was a memorial exhibition at Scottish Gallery in 2000 and another show there in 2003. Fifty-eight examples of his work are held in many UK public collections including Aberdeen and Dundee Art Galleries. Lived in Dundee for many years.
