* JAMES FURNEAUX (SCOTTISH 1935 - 2013), ROOFTOPS
oil on board, signed, titled verso
framed and under glass
image size 49cm x 83cm, overall size 68cm x 99cm
Note: James Furneaux, a former student of Gray’s School of Art, followed his passion, celebrating the city of Aberdeen whilst making good use of his artistic skill during 50 or more years. His artist’s eye not only captured key landmarks in the city, but sometimes, as in this case, celebrated them from unfamiliar angles. He would also choose to depict scenes most of us would not necessarily identify or notice at first glance. He was a distinct and familiar character often seen sketching in the streets of the city. Jimmy possessed the ability to capture urban scenes, which he may always have been attracted to, having initially carried out some training in Architecture. His drawings and compositions immediately connect the viewer with the city and he built a body of work which captures the city in moments of time, visual memories for those who live in the city and those who left the city a long time ago, recording the way things were. He honed his skills through his affiliation with Peacock Visual Arts over many decades, his work is displayed in the City Hospital and various public buildings. Aberdeen was his physical home and along with his family, the city was also his spiritual home.
Condition of the picture is good overall, with no visible or known issues.
