* ALEXANDRA STEELE (SCOTTISH b. 1946), LOW TIDE, ARISAIG
oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso
framed
image size 60cm x 60cm, overall size 76cm x 76cm
Label verso: The Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, Eton.
Note: Alexandra Steele was born and educated in Scotland. She lives in central Scotland and for over 25 years was a visiting specialist art teacher to many primary schools in the area. She gave up teaching in 2001 and is now painting fulltime. Her family are originally from the north of Scotland and it was here, on her grandparents croft that she spent most of her childhood. She is especially drawn to the luminescent skies and seas of the West Coast where the colours and light continue to inspire, challenge and delight. From June to September she visits the Highlands & Islands, where she sketches and takes hundreds of photographs. In the winter months she paints almost exclusively with a palette knife in her studio, where she tries to capture these lonely places. Her style has been influenced by French Impressionism and by the Scottish Colourists, particularly Peploe. With these influences she has developed a personal style generally using multiple layers of paint. She considers herself a very fortunate person, spending her time doing what she enjoys most.
