Trio of Bodies - Henrietta Whitman
Trio of Bodies - Henrietta Whitman
Oil paints, watercolour, gesso, hard-modelling paste, pencil. 630 x 870 mm - Framed
ARTIST STATEMENT: I was drawn to the work of Francisco J. Jimenez due to his interesting use of a variety of media in order to create the textures observed in his originals. When relating to my Aleve l theme of the toxicity perpetuated throughout the world of ballet and identifying the factors which contribute to the perpetuation of a certain, often unattainable, body type, I wanted to look at an artist's style whom I may look to apply to this theme. One of the main characteristics featured, alongside the typical use of a neutral colour pallet and nude subjects were the harsh, black lines often used to outline the bodies; something I felt was stark and unforgiving, reflecting the nature of ballet institutions’ outlook on body type. ABOUT THE ARTIST: This piece is Shortlisted in the 2022 Sovereign Art Foudation Students Prize in Guernsey. Henrietta created this piece aged 16 while a student at The Ladies' College.

The Sale Room system will keep your bid to a minimum amount which may not meet the reserve price and result in a sale, please contact SAFGuernsey@sovereigngroup.com if you would like your current bid to be raised to a specific level. The Sovereign Art Foundation advises students to consider setting a reserve price of £80 for their work.
This auction is being run under the supervision of Martel Maides Auctions and by taking part you will be bound by their general auction terms and conditions, available at www.martelmaidesauctions.com. In addition, please note that several pieces in this auction form part of a student’s active GCSE or A Level portfolio and the original must remain in the possession of the school until the examination has finished. In these cases, a replica piece will be provided to the buyer until it can be exchanged with the original piece. These pieces are identified in the individual Lot descriptions.
