Veronese school of the 18th centuryAdoration of the shepherdsOil on canvas with polylobed upper side82 x 96 cmThe artwork is related to the Veronese school of the early 18th century, therefore close to the prince painter of the time on the banks of the Adige: Antonio Balestra. In the faces and emphatic deeds the canvas finds a good attributive comfort if approached to that of the same subject, in a private collection, hesitated by Sotheby's in 2001 and published on page 98 of the volume Bortoloni Piazzetta Tiepolo il '700 Veneto. The altarpiece, always of the same subject, is kept in the Cathedral of Asolo and recognized as an autograph by Balestra in 2015, after the restoration. The aesthetic and technical factors lead to attribute the canvas in question to the Veronese master Antonio Balestra or to a prominent element of his workshop or circle, capable of expressing himself according to the style of the master.
