Johannes, Jan or Johan van der Bent (Amsterdam 1649/1651 - 1690) Landscape with flock, shepherds and wayfarers Oil on canvas 48 x 66 cm The artwork shows the typical flock present in many paintings by Van der Bent, derived from the examples of Berchem: the first cow that observes the viewer can be found identical in Shepherdess with herd at rest, an artwork preserved at the Landsmuseum Oldenburg Schloss. The peculiarity that distinguishes Johan van der Bent from Berchem can be seen in the landscape where Van der Brent inserted his scenes of popular life taken from the Bamboccianti. His landscapes have hilly wings that close the horizon and therefore are devoid of perspective escapes, making the whole deliberately wild and without any courtly inclination.
