Description
Large and interesting bezoar stone mounted on a 16th century gilded and embossed copper base. The base is imposing and decorated with copious embossing and chase work depicting wreaths, putties, fruit, flowers and mermaids. The base is hallmarked. The gilded metal upper fastening is a later addition. Total weight: 3.614 g. Measurements of the stone: 16 x 15 x 15 cm. Total measurements: 37 x 21 cm.The bezoar is a stone or mass that can be found in the stomachs of certain animals. The term comes from the Farsi word pâdzahr, which means antidote or antivenom. In the past it was believed that this type of stone was a cure for all sorts of poisons, and pharmacists sold them or rented them for high prices. Their properties are mentioned in 15th century medical texts, and they were objects of scientific interest until the 18th century, when they were often included in natural history collections.
