"Madonna and Child". Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Ulm, Swabia. Germany. Gothic. 15th Century.Mary faces forward, with her head leaning slightly towards the Child. She wears a fine crown and her body is covered with a courtly dress decorated with flowers, and a cloak which she gathers up in her left hand, which is hidden, creating a very elegant effect of clothing in movement falling to the floor, which stylises the figure. The Child is seated on Mary´s right hand and is smiling gently while caressing her. The quality of the skin tones and the fine sculptural execution of the faces is outstanding, as well as the mastery with which the long, deep folds of the cloak are sculpted, which creates a great sensation of volume and movement. Provenance: Bought in Antique dealer in 1980.Height: 107 cm.
