"Saint John the Baptist" Carved wooden sculpture. The Netherlands. Possibly Circa 1700.Magnificent Flemish figure of indisputable sculptural quality. John the Baptist, the Precursor, is characterised as a young man with a beard and long hair, wearing the habitual leather tunic, a ram´s head sticks out from beneath his cloak. His constant attribute is the Agnus Dei, which on this occasion is situated above the Holy Scriptures. Provenance: Bought in Christie's, London, in the auction that took place on 5th December 1995. 77 x 28 x 17 cm.
