"Madonna and Child" Sculpted jet figure. Possibly 16th century. In the Middle Ages the production of objects made of jet flourished due to the number of pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela. The demand for these objects grew as their devotional character was mixed with superstion, as they were considered to protect against the evil eye. From the 15th century the jet-workers´ guild became one of the most powerful. The best made jet objects were those of a liturgical or devotional character such as pax-boards, crosses, sculptures of saints and Our Lady or abbesses´ necklaces. 18 x 6,5 x 3,5 cm.
