Alfred Reth (Budapest, 1884 - Paris, 1966) "Personnage" Oil on panel. Signed and dated in 1939. 30 x 29 cm. The painter was born in Hungary but became a naturalised French citizen. Reth is considered to be one of the principal figures of the avant-garde and the Paris School. In 1905, he installed himself Paris, with the painter József Egry. From 1907 he was part of the cubist movement. That year and in 1911 he exhibited at the “Salon des Indépendants”. After the First World War, Paris plunged into the “Années folles” and became an artistic ferment. Reth was one of the first painters to lean toward the abstract. He joined the group “Abstraction - création : Art non figuratif “ in 1931 with Arp, Georges Valmier, Herbin, Kupka, etc. which was active until 1936. From 1946, he formed the “Salon des Réalités Nouvelles” association, where he exhibited assiduously. His work can be found at the Georges Pompidou Centre and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, among other museums. Provenance: Michel Boutin collection, Paris. Private collection Barcelona.
