"The death of Saint Francis of Assisi" Gilt and polychrome carved wood relief. Spanish school. Circa 1670.
Magnificent relief which depicts the death of Saint Francis at the Porziuncola, he is surrounded by his friars whilst the angels transport his soul to heaven. There is a vanitas at the saint´s feet. The sculptor´s mastery in the carving of the friars´ faces and the fine scraffitto on the tunics are outstanding, as are the perspective and depth achieved with the arquitectural background which depicts the small church where the saint died.
