"Saint Apollonia". Polychrome carved wooden sculpture. Catalan school. Romanesque. End of 12th century.
The saint is in a forward facing position and wearing a red dress with white trimming which rests on her feet, and a blue star-studded cloak with a golden border which covers her shoulders, falling down her back. She wears a necklace and her hair is covered with a veil which still preserves part of its polychrome. She is standing on a polychrome plinth.
The original polychrome is preserved, but with some flaws. This is a magnificent sculpture displaying Romanesque hieratic attitude. The polychrome on the skin is outstanding and so is the face, which transmits serenity and majesty. Saint Apollonia, virgin and martyr from Alexandria. The palm and tongs, symbols of her martyrdom, are lost.
