Wooden box with pasto varnish. Colombia. 17th century.
A magnificent box which is preserved with its original ironwork. On the cover the handles are decorated with pasto varnish, imitating the finishing of the ironwork. Decorated profusely on all sides and on the lid, both inside and outside. The exterior is decorated with plants, flowers, luxuriant trees, bunches of grapes, baskets of fruit, birds, lions, rabbits, monkeys and other animals. The inside of the lid is perfectly preserved with richly coloured decoration. In the centre is an Eagle in a red medallion, surrounded by baskets of fruit, flowers and leaves, bunches of grapes, exotic birds, lions, monkeys and other small animals
