Description
"Saint Catherine of Alexandria". Polychrome and gilt wooden carving. Gothic. Late 15th century.
This sculpture is attributed to Alejo de Vahia, due to its exceptional fineness, both in the expressiveness of the face and hands as well as the carving of the rich clothing. This carving can be linked to the prelate figure in the Bolaos de Campo altarpiece, exhibited at the Valladolid Diocesan Museum, as well as the Virgin with Child from the Santiago de Valladolid church.
Depicted as standing on the head of the Emperor Maxentius, who she refused to marry as he asked her to reject her faith, she is crowned and dressed in the clothes of a noblewoman and, in concordance with the legend, is very beautiful. The sculptural work is very fine.
Recently restored and treated for woodworm.
Height: 80.5 cm.
