"Immaculate Virgin". Carved polychrome and gilt wooden sculpture. Spanish school. 17th century.
The virgin rises up gloriously from a base of clouds. Covered by a rich dress decorated with fruit and flowers, cinched in at the waist with a golden cord and adorned at the neck with an engraved brooch. She is wrapped in a cloak which the sculptor has masterfully managed to make appear as if it is moving, giving the figure more majesty as it looks as if she is elevating into the sky on the wind. Magnificent example of Spanish baroque imagery, possibly from the Aragon or Rioja region.
