"Virgin in Majesty (Sede Sapientiae)". Carved wooden polychrome sculpture chiefly in reds, blues and greens. Catalan Romanesque. Late 13th century.
Mary is facing forwards, crowned and seated on the throne of glory while holding the Christ Child, who is giving blessing with his right hand and holding a book of the Holy Scriptures in his left, on her knee. Wearing a veil and a red dress, her shoulders are covered by a long cloak which is gathered in at the knees.
The piece is obviously from the end of the Romanesque period because although it is a hieratic group, and the Virgin´s face is severe, she seems to be faintly smiling. The Child is slightly off centre and Mary is touching him as she is holding his left hand.
Height: 67,5 cm.
