Description
"The Annunciation and the Visitation". Pair of carved polychrome and gilt wooden reliefs. Spanish school. 16th century.
Originally from an altar. Representing two of the five Joyful Mysteries. Mary´s visit to her cousin Isabel, mother of John the Baptist, while both of them are pregnant, and the Annunciation.
In both reliefs the scene takes place under a vaulted architectural feature. In “The Visitation” the characters are in profile with their cloaks and headgear having great movement, giving naturalness and realism to the scene. In “The Annunciation” the Virgin has a sweet expression and is wearing rich clothing, she is kneeling in prayer on a prie-dieu whilst inclining her face towards the visiting angel. Between the two is a vase of Madonna lilies which symbolises Mary´s chastity.
