Description
Polychrome and gilt carved wooden reliquary. Castilian school. 16th century.
Representing the bust of a saint, possibly Saint Agnes because of the inscription on the back and because of the court clothes she is wearing. Saint Agnes was a teenager, the daughter of Roman nobles, martyred at the age of thirteen. She is always depicted as young and richly dressed. The figure is of great sculptural quality. The fine and delicate facial features are outstanding, as is her hair, which falls in curling locks at either side, giving great movement and naturalness to the sculpture, as do the sculpted and polychrome details on the clothing. It is worth noting that the magnificent original gilding has been preserved.
The back is completely gilded, with polychrome floral details, and the inscriptions "Santa Inés" (Saint Agnes) and "Santa Engracia" (Saint Engratia), and in the centre the legend: "Por comprar la margarita dio la bida Margarita" (For buying the daisy Margarita was given life) and under that a sketch in oil which seems to represent a soul in a coffin.
65 x 60 cm.
