"Saint Stephen". Carved polychrome and gilt wooden sculpture. Gothic. Germany. 15th Century.
The saint, seated in a frontal position, is wearing vestments and carries the Gospel in his left hand, on which appears his symbol - the stones from his stoning. In his right hand the palm has the upper fragment missing
It is an interesting figure in which the flesh tones and the treatment of the clothing with abundant folds are outstanding, giving great volume and movement to the sculpture.
Saint Stephen, Deacon, named the Protomartyr as he was the first of Christ’s disciples to be martyred in the year 33.
