"Imposing figure of Christ on the Cross". Carved wooden sculpture with a little polychrome and gilt residue. Catalonia. 13th century.
Magnificent sculpture, due to its size and age. Christ, with an expression of abandonment, but still serene, has a half-open mouth and closed eyes. He is wearing the crown of thorns with hair falling in curled locks which rest on the shoulders.
With great mastery of carving, the sculptor moves us and transmits the perfection and serene suffering of Christ on the cross.
Faults. There is a longitudinal fissure in the middle of the body.
Height: 175 cm.
