"Christ in Majesty" or "Maiestas Domini". Carved wooden sculpture with polychrome residue. Catalan school. 13th century.
A magnificent sculpture depicting Christ in Majesty. A Christian icon representing the figure of Christ triumphant, also known as Christ Pantocrator.
These are often found on the tympanums above the main church doors, or painted on the cupolas in the apse. They are very few example of this particular representation of the Christ.
Christ is depicted as crowned, with a serene expression, seated on a throne and covered with a tunic which rests on his shoulders and is cinched at the hip, hanging over his legs. There is some polychrome residue. Faults.
