"Seated Virgin (Sedes Sapientiae)". Carved and polychrome wooden sculpture. Late 13th century.
The Virgin Mary is shown in a frontal position, wearing a crown, and she is seated on the throne of glory. She is covered with a red dress cinched with a belt and a blue tunic which, passing over her arms, falls in folds to the floor. Her face is framed with a veil which pulls back her hair, and her demeanour is serious but sweet. She holds the Christ child, who rests his hand on his mother’s neck, in her left hand. The child´s crown has not been preserved. Mary’s right arm is missing, as is the child’s left arm.
Height without the base: 101 cm.
