Description
Magnificent Christ sculpted in polychrome ivory. Goa. Indo-Portuguese. 17th century.
One foot has been restored and a finger is missing.
From the beginning of the Spanish settlement in the Philippines, the evangelists from different religious orders needed imagery for worship. It was because of this that marvellous imagery began to be produced, mixing oriental art, which was the artists´ own, with influences from previous examples of European art. Imagery which inspired the Hispano-Philippine artists were mannerist paintings from the second half of the sixteenth century, where we find a Christ alive, or dying, rather than dead.
40 x 35,2 cm.
