Description
"Saint Martin". Carved wooden relief. German or Flemish school. 16th – 17th century.
Magnificent and exquisitely crafted relief, depicting one of the most iconographic episodes of the life of the Saint as a soldier. He is portrayed on horseback, cutting a piece of his cape with his sword (which has not been preserved), to give it to a poor man, who is almost naked at the door of Amiens Cathedral. The group formed by the steed and the two men, joined by the cape, is exceptionally beautiful, and completed by the figure of God the Father who appears on a cloud.
The quality of the carving is outstanding, with details of great delicacy such as the horse’s mane and ornaments and the faces and hair of the characters.
Measurements with frame: 117 x 92.5 x 15 cm.
