"Seated Virgin Mary (Sedes Sapientiae)". Carved walnut wooden sculpture. France. Gothic. Early 14th century.
Mary is seated on her throne and holding the Christ Child with her hands. He is standing on her knees. She is wearing a dress and cloak which fall from her shoulders to her knees, dropping in elegant gothic folds. The head is crowned and covered with a short veil. Her face has a sweet expression as she looks at the Child, with the suggestion of a smile.
The Christ Child is in an unusual position, standing up and completely turned towards his mother, who he is looking at with a smile. The child’s left hand is missing.
97 x 40 x 30 cm.
