"The passion of Christ. The flagellation". Imposing carved polychrome and gilt relief. Castilian school. 16th century.
A relief which depicts the moment in which Jesus, after appearing before Pilate, is flogged. He is portrayed naked, covered with a loin cloth and tied to a column by the hands whilst two thugs flog him with canes.
Executed by a great sculptor, it is without doubt a magnificent example of Spanish renaissance imagery, showing great skill in the treatment of anatomy, giving the group great expression as well as great realism.
Jesus sits in the centre of the scene with a severe expression, but also transmitting great sadness, appearing to be waiting with resignation for the lashes which he is going to receive from his tormentors, who stand at each side of him with arms raised, wielding the canes.
Magnificent ornamentation with the polychrome and gilding, which highlight the quality of the carving.
117 x 97 cm.
