A silver filigree container, with a bezoar or “Goa Stone” inside. Probably from Goa, India . 17th century
The bezoar is a stone which can be found in the stomachs of certain animals. The name comes from the Persian word pâdzahr, which means antidote, as in the past it was thought that the stone was a cure for all poisons, and chemists sold them or rented them for high prices. In 15th century medical texts their properties are mentioned, and they excited scientific interest up until the 18th century when they formed part of naturalists´ collection cabinets.
