"Virgin with Child". Carved polychrome and gilt wooden sculpture. Castilian school. 16th century.
Mary is depicted standing, in a frontal position, with a foot resting on a quarter moon, which allows her to hold the Christ Child on her hip, giving movement to the sculpture.
She is wearing elegant clothing cinched in at the waist, decorated with red, blue and golden leaves. She wears a large, richly decorated veil which, beginning at her head, rests on her shoulders and falls to the floor forming folds. The Christ Child is giving blessing with his right hand and holding a fruit in his left.
The virgin and child are wearing bejewelled silver crowns.
