Impressive carved polychrome and gilt wooden relief. Castilian school. 16th century.
The scene depicts the moment when Roman soldiers placed the crown of thorns on Jesus´ head during the Passion.
The sculptor managed to bring great drama and expression to the group, as well as movement.
In the centre of the scene Jesus, captive and tied by the hands, appears calm as the crown of thorns is placed on his head. Seated on a bench and barely covered by a cape which falls in many folds. On both sides, in profile, two soldiers crown Jesus, dressed in clothing of the time, richly carved and polychrome. The expressiveness of the faces is outstanding. 101 x 91 cm.
