"The Virgin in Seat of Wisdom (Sedes Sapientiae)." Polychrome and gilt carved wooden sculpture. Possibly from Navarra. Gothic. 15th century.
Mary is portrayed sitting down, holding the Christ child on her left knee. Jesus is giving blessing with his right hand whilst he holds the world in his left. Mary is covered by a veil which falls on her shoulders, she wears a tunic and cloak which fall to the floor forming folds. Outstanding are the delicate features on Mary’s face. The crown is missing. There has been some restoration work on the polychrome.
Height: 74 cm.
