"Calvary"
Tempera on board painting with gold background. Probably the concluding scene of an altarpiece.
Beneath a gothic arch Christ is depicted on the cross. At his feet are Saint John and the Virgin Mary. The three characters have gold lacework halos. Christ’s face shows the marks of suffering, his head leans to one side and the body, abandoned to pain, is covered with a perizonium. The dramatic nature of the scene is shown by the blood on Christ’s body and the distraught expressions of sadness on the faces of the Virgin Mary and Saint John, kneeling with their hands in prayer position. In the background a rocky landscape symbolizes Golgotha.
