Catalan school. Circa 1420-1430. Jaume Huguet circle.
"The birth of Virgin Mary"
Tempera on board painting with a gold background. It comes from an altarpiece. Beneath a gothic arch topped with windows and flanked by pinnacles the virgin birth is shown. In an indoor scene, Saint Anne leaning back in her bed holds Mary in her arms, accompanied by three women who bring her food. Near the bed, on a platform, we see a basket of embroidery and in the foreground a tiled floor with geometric patterns, painted in perspective. It was customary in gothic art to portray the birth of Mary in pictorial pieces which showed off the luxurious interiors of the affluent.
