Léonard Defrance war in Holland, Montpellier, Toulouse und Rom als Porträt- und Genremaler tätig. In der Heiligen Stadt hatte er Austausch mit dem Maler Laurent Pêcheux (1729-1821) und anderen Malerkollegen. In deren künstlerischem Umfeld kann dieses stimmungsvolle Porträt angesiedelt werden.
