1044 A gilt-bronze-mounted cabinet by Zwiener, Jansen Last quarter 19th century, Paris, stamped to top of carcass "Mon. Zwiener" (Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener fl. Circa 1875 - 1900 German / French) and "Jansen Suc.r", the lock plate stamped "Brevete Paris" and "V.F. Paris" with crossed keys symbol, of mahogany over oak secondary wood, the inset eared rectangular grey marble top over a palmette-decorated frieze drawer above a hinged door with maidens playing horns within the spandrels of an arch, opening to a marble-lined cupboard, over an open shelf, the rounded corner angles headed by fasces over fluted tapering legs wrapped at intervals with ribbons and terminating in foliate paw feet, 30.75" H x 19" W x 15.25" D, est:$3000/5000 Note: Born in Silesia in 1849, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener was one of the foremost cabinet makers of the late 19th century, noted for his luxe works exhibiting the highest standard of craftsmanship, including the use of fine ormolu mounts. He employed as his sculptor Leon Message, who would also work with Francois Linke when Linke took over Zwiener`s workshop in 1895. (It is thought that Linke may have worked under Zwiener when he first arrived in Paris in 1875.) Zwiener`s pieces were acquired by leading collectors of the 19th century, including Ludwig II, who commissioned a desk from him. Zwiener won the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889 and exhibited works at the German Pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. In 1898 he received a large commission from the King of Prussia and was summoned to Berlin, where he continued to work after giving up his Pars workshop. The Paris retailer Maison Jansen was founded in 1880 and was in business until 1989. It provided furnishings to houses of royalty, aristocracy and other notable clients around the world, including the White House during the Kennedy administration. Condition: Overall good condition with wear commensurate with age. Scratches to marble top. Scattered dark spots and verdigris to mounts. Scattered typical minor shallow chips and marks to legs. Cupboard interior with loose marble panel to top and lacking marble side panels. Some chipping along one edge of bottom interior marble panel. Your bid indicates acceptance of our Conditions of Sale.
